Issue 23

Issue 23
ULTRA is the longest-running printed magazine in Europe dedicated to the sport of ultrarunning. Established in 2015, it has served the ultra community ever since, and ships worldwide.
Issue 23 is packed with extraordinary stories and stunning imagery from across the world of ultrarunning – from the mud-soaked hills of Surrey to the sun-scorched roads of ancient Greece. Rodrigo Freeman takes on the Authentic Pheidippides Run, the legendary 304-mile round trip from Athens to Sparta and back, while Robbie Britton tests his limits at Terra de Gigantes, a 306km non-stop race across Portugal. Sophie Raworth, in an extract from her new book, describes the terror and elation of running the OCC in the Alps – including a near-miss on a narrow mountain path above a Swiss valley.
Closer to home, Andy Nuttall wages a war of attrition against the mud of the Winterfold 55, and Vassos Alexander heads to Otley to meet Punk Panther's Ryk Downes – a man who started an ultrarunning company for a very dramatic reason. We celebrate community and teamwork with a fascinating insight into Team Belgium's extraordinary success at the Backyard Ultra World Championships.
This issue's UK Ultrarunning Hall of Fame inducts three remarkable figures: Billy Bland, the Borrowdale quarryman whose Bob Graham Round record stood for 36 years; Frances Hayward, who ran the Comrades Marathon unofficially in 1923 and went to the theatre afterwards; and William Sichel, who didn't start running seriously until 39 and went on to complete the world's longest certified footrace.
We also bring you expert gear advice from Donnie Campbell and Mike Parsons, a moving account from Lisa Jackson of running her 109th marathon after bereavement and injury, and a tribute to Ourea Events — the organisation behind the Dragon's Back Race and Cape Wrath Ultra — which closed its doors in March 2026.
it is created, printed and bound in the U.K and is yours for just £11.99 +P&P. All profits go to charities and good causes related to the world of ultra running.
