Ultra Evolution Ltd ENVIRONMENTAL MANIFESTO

Sustainability statement

Ultra Evolution Ltd is the company that publishes ULTRA magazine, and organises the ULTRA festival and The Hangman race. As a publisher of a printed magazine we recognise our responsibility to help protect the environment and are committed to reducing waste and environmentally damaging practices. At our events we are committed to reducing/eliminating single-use plastics and reducing waste.

What we do now

- We print ULTRA magazine on FSC-certified non-coated paper, which has been produced in a responsible manner and is recyclable

- We print the magazine in the UK to avoid wasteful shipping requirements

- In our races and events we minimise waste and operate a ‘leave only footprints’ policy where the land returns to the state in which we found it

- We do not use single-use plastic cups for water in races, instead requiring entrants to provide their own reusable cup

- When offering food at aid stations we minimise use of food sold in single-use plastics, reducing to zero where possible (eg by making our own soup for race finishers)

- We encourage and incentivise runners to not only minimise their own litter, but to actively pick up others’ litter from the trail where practical

- We encourage other race organisers to follow suit through best practice and communications via the website and magazine

- We power our office with electricity from The People's Energy Company, which provides 97% of its electricity from renewable sources

- Our office minimises electricity usage by using low-energy light bulbs, and minimises paper waste by using almost solely electronic means for developing its magazine. We recycle packaging material and use eco-friendly products where possible

In future, we will:

- Switch to printing on fully recycled paper when it becomes financially viable to do so

- Produce a PDF or other digital version of the magazine as soon as practically possible, for customers who do not wish to take a paper-based magazine

- Work with carbon-offsetting initiatives to offset paper use when printing the magazine

- Offer the planting of a tree as an alternative to supplying T-shirts and/or medals for our races
