The Hangman Ultra 2025

THE RACE

The seventh edition of the Hangman Ultra, along 54km of beautiful Hampshire countryside. As in previous years the race will be low-key, with a great family atmosphere and maximum 100 runners. The terrain is mixed but mostly typical countryside trail, and the views are wonderful particularly from the hill near the turnaround point (the Combe Gibbet). Cut-offs are generous, and we'll do everything we can to ensure you finish. We are, in short, excited, and we hope you are too.

THE ROUTE

The route follows the Test Way trail north from Longparish Village Hall through various villages up to Gallows Down where the Combe Gibbet is situated. This is the halfway point. Each runner will round the gibbet before returning back along the Test Way to Longparish. There are tricky sections and you may find all sorts of surfaces including oozy mud, hard ground with gnarly tyre tracks, stony ground, ruts, hills, road, narrow areas, animals, stiles, gates, nettles... Basically be prepared for most terrain types that the English countryside can throw at you.

AID STATIONS AND FOOD

Checkpoints are at the 14.5km, 27km and 39.5km points. You MUST ensure that you are prepared for those distances and carry enough water. There is a 1 litre mandatory minimum per entrant for water, but if you feel you need more please carry it. Water and Coca-Cola will be provided at each aid station, you must provide a cup or other drinking vessel as we do not offer disposable cups for environmental reasons. The aud stations will also feature a selection of the following types of delicious snack:

  • Flapjacks

  • Brownies

  • Biscuits

  • Crisps

  • Jelly Babies

  • Bananas

  • Oranges

  • Salted Peanuts

Each checkpoint will have a bottle of hand gel ready on the way in, you will be encouraged to use it!

Food (suitable for vegans, vegetarianas and omnivores) such as soup, cake, hot drinks and snacks will be provided for participants at the finish.

KIT

The Hangman Ultra takes place in August, and as such the weather is likely to be relatively mild. The race is almost all on trail and therefore does have hazards such as stony tracks and tractor tyre treads which can easily turn an ankle and end a race. It’s also very long! Even though you may have completed races of 50 miles or longer, do pay respect to this distance – it’s still a long way and if you get pacing or nutrition/hydration wrong, or you pack minimal kit and the weather turns bad, you could be in for a rough time. Also, if you are timed out or retire from the race you may have to wait at a checkpoint until a lift is available, it is vital that you have something warm to wear while waiting.

With that in mind, we have a small MANDATORY kit list as follows:

  • At least 1 litre of water in either bottles or bladder from the start please

  • Fully charged mobile phone containing the number for the race director

  • Waterproof jacket

However, we recommend that you carry more than this, for example:

  • Cup for cold drinks at aid stations

  • Route map – hard copy

  • GPS device with the route programmed in

  • Survival blanket or bag (bag preferred)

  • Whistle

  • Base layer or windproof – although it’s August it *could* get quite cold and blowy in some of the more exposed areas of the land

  • If you feel the cold, consider bringing a hat and gloves just in case

PRIZES

There will be a medal for all finishers, and a trophy for the winning male, female and nonbinary runners. There are no T-shirts or race number bibs; Ultra Evolution is committed to reducing the environmental impact of this race by reducing waste, and also by donating some of your entry fee to Trees Not Tees. A tree will be planted for every finisher of The Hangman Ultra 2023 who completes the race within the cut-off time.

Please feel free to email us if you have any questions - info@ultra-magazine.com. See you at the start line!
